All About Duvet Covers

Duvet may be a strange-looking word if you’ve never seen it or heard it spoken before. It’s a French word that means “down,” which we’ll cover more below. So, how do you pronounce “duvet?” Doo-vay is how we say it.

What is a Duvet?

A duvet is a type of bed covering filled with down feathers, cotton, silk, wool, or a synthetic alternative. Duvets originated in Europe, where they were filled with duck and goose down feathers, hence the French name meaning “down.”

What is a Duvet Cover?

Think of the duvet cover as a pillowcase for the duvet. It’s a removable, soft case that can be easily laundered without having to stuff an entire duvet into your washing machine.

Duvet vs Comforter

Is a duvet the same thing as a comforter? No, duvets and comforters are similar in some ways, but they are different types of bedding. While a comforter can be stuffed with a variety of fillings these days, it typically doesn’t require a removable cover like a duvet. Also, comforters often have a pattern or print on them, whereas duvets are typically a solid color since the duvet cover is where the print or pattern is most commonly found.

How to Put on a Duvet Cover

While there are several ways to put on a duvet cover, we find the steps below easiest for us. If you’ve never done it before, it may seem tricky at first, but there are dozens of YouTube videos in case you’re a visual learner.

  1. Locate the bottom opening of your duvet cover. It will often have ties, snaps, or a zipper.
  2. Lay the duvet cover flat on top of your duvet (on your bed) with the bottom opening at the bottom of the bed. Note: For this step, some people prefer to put the duvet on top of the duvet cover. Whatever works best for you is fine. Also, if your duvet cover has ties at both the top and bottom, you’ll want to secure your duvet to the cover during this step.
  3. Fold the duvet down towards the bottom, underneath the duvet cover.
  4. Take one top corner of the duvet and put it into the duvet cover. Grab the corner with the cover and pull up to unfold the duvet inside the cover. Do the same with the other top corner.
  5. Take one of the bottom corners and put it into the duvet cover. Be sure the middle of the duvet is in the cover. You may need to shake or fluff the duvet cover to make sure the duvet is flat inside. Repeat with the other corner, and make sure the whole duvet is lying flat inside the cover.
  6. Zip, snap, or tie the bottom of the duvet cover to close it. Make any adjustments needed, and you’re done!
